The Reading Terminal Market owes its origin to the farmers who would sell their fresh produce in the city in the mid 1800's. In 1859 two markets were constructed, the Franklin Market and the Farmers' Market. These served as the beginnings of what would become the Reading Terminal Market.

Today the market serves as a must see Philadelphia attractions, right up there with the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and the Art Museum.
